Noise-canceling earplugs mainly use passive noise cancellation (PNC) to reduce external noise. They are made of high-density soundproof materials (such as memory foam or silicone) that fit snugly in the ear canal to block noise transmission.

Noise-canceling earplugs can significantly reduce environmental noise but cannot achieve 100% noise isolation. They are more effective at blocking mid-to-high-frequency noises (such as voices and mechanical sounds) but may be less effective against low-frequency noises (such as airplane engine or subway rumble).

Noise-canceling earplugs rely on physical materials to block noise, while ANC headphones use built-in microphones to detect external noise and generate sound waves that cancel it out. ANC is more effective for low-frequency noise, while earplugs are better for passive noise isolation.

When used correctly, noise-canceling earplugs do not harm hearing. However, improper use—such as inserting too forcefully or wearing them for prolonged periods without breaks—may cause discomfort or ear pressure issues.

Some people may experience a feeling of pressure or slight discomfort in the ears. It is recommended to remove the earplugs occasionally to allow the ears to rest. Also, avoid using them in situations where hearing is essential for safety (e.g., cycling or running).

Silicone earplugs are reusable and can be washed, while foam earplugs are usually disposable or have a short lifespan (recommended to replace every 3-7 days for hygiene and effectiveness).
